Showdown EU Taxonomy – Will the EU Parliament stop the greenwashing of nuclear power & fossil gas?

The decision day is here: Next Tuesday (14/6), the European Parliament’s Environment and Economics Committees will vote on whether nuclear power and natural gas should be given an eco-label, just as renewables – as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants. International investor organisations, EU member states, environmental associations and the Commission’s Council of Experts are protesting this attempted greenwashing! The credibility of the eco-label and thus the financing of the ecological transformation are at stake.

At our big cross-party taxonomy conference in February, we helped to start a coalition against this greenwashing in the Taxonomy. Will this coalition hold and win the vote in the European Parliament?

Since the conference, Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine has shown how immense the European Union’s dependence on Russia’s gas and uranium is  and how this makes us vulnerable to blackmail. Consequently, it has now come out: Russia lobbied massively for the inclusion of nuclear and gas in the taxonomy, while the European Parliament and the public were kept in the dark.

That is why Europe Calling e.V. and MEP Michael Bloss jointly invite you to a big showdown webinar on taxonomy. With our high-level guests we want to discuss:

What is the argument against eco-labelling for nuclear and gas? What role does the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine play in this? What are the chances of this proposal being rejected in the EU Parliament? What do civil society, churches and financial experts say?
