Europe Calling “The Methane Backdoor: Is Europe Undermining Its Green Deal to appease Trump?”

7.July 19:00 - 20:00

Dear friends!

Methane is the second-largest contributor to global warming after CO2. Achieving a reduction in methane emissions from fossil fuels is widely seen as one of the most feasible and impactful steps in the fight against runaway climate chaos.

Europe fought hard for getting the world’s first ever methane regulation, aimed at tackling methane emissions in the fossil fuel sector. However, EU member states are now considering weakening (they say: simplifying) the methane regulation in an attempt to facilitate more US LNG and avoid an expansion of the trade war initiated by Trump.

But how methane-intensive is US LNG really? Is it even possible to “clean it up” and align US gas imports with the European methane regulation and climate targets? And should Europe compromise its climate goals for geopolitical convenience?

Join us as we explore these urgent questions with our expert panel:

  • Sharon Wilson and Justin Mikulka, from Oilfield Witness, a leading organization regarding the documentation and revelation of actual methane emissions of the US oil and gas industry
  • Jutta Paulus, Member of the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament and lead negotiator of the methane regulation (co-organizer)
  • Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ, the not-for-profit global leader in methane emissions certification
  • Moderator: Maximilian Fries, Managing Director of Europe Calling e.V.

When? Monday, 7th of July from 19:00 to 20:00 CEST.
