Europe Calling Live from the UN Climate Conference in Egypt “Disaster or glimmer of hope – What will the #COP27 achieve?”
17.November 2022 17:30 - 19:00
Recording:
Dear friends,
The 27th UN Climate Change Conference currently underway in Egypt is overshadowed by Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the European energy crisis and the global comeback of coal, oil and gas. Is the climate conference threatening to be a disaster or is there still hope in these gloomy times?
The global goal is to keep global warming well below 2 degrees. Yet seven years after the Paris Climate Agreement and one year after the Glasgow Climate Pact, we are hurtling towards a world almost 3 degrees hotter. The European Union’s climate targets are not enough to meet the 2 degree target. This means we are breaking with the Paris Climate Agreement.
Countries around the world are reluctant to name new targets, measures or fresh money to stem the climate crisis. What needs to happen to turn the tide once and for all, so that we are no longer just talking about targets, but about binding measures and funding? What must the Global North do to bear the already dramatic costs of climate damage in the Global South? What does it mean that the path to the 1.5°C target was even removed from the official conference agenda?
We go live to the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Egypt to Michael Bloss, the climate policy spokesperson for the Greens/EFA in the EU Parliament and high-profile guests who give us exclusive insight into the negotiations. With them:
- Annalena Baerbock, German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs and our special guest
- Chiara Martinelli, Director of the climate NGO Climate Action Network Europe
- Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf, climate researcher & head of the Earth System Analysis Department at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research
- Yero Sarr, co-founder of Fridays for Future Senegal
