Europe Calling ‘Europe United? What industrial policy does Europe need in the global race?’
16.January 18:30 - 20:00

Recording:
Dear friends,
It is a paradox: the European single market with common rules, standards and largely open borders has existed for 30 years. However, when it comes to European industrial policy, each member state usually does its own thing, often with a large dose of national subsidies.
Initiatives for a truly European industrial policy, such as the ‘Net Zero Industry Act’ of the last EU Commission, are lagging far behind China’s investment programmes and the US Inflation Reduction Act. The big money for Intel & Co. to settle in the EU is invested by states in their own interest. And with Trump’s inauguration on 20 January 2025, the pressure on them will continue to increase.
The new EU Commission, the second under Ursula von der Leyen, also sees it this way and wants to follow up the Green Deal of the last 5 years with a ‘Clean Industrial Deal’ to make European industry competitive and climate-neutral and to preserve industrial jobs, which in many regions of Europe are more than just jobs.
But what would an industrial strategy at the European level need to look like to be successful?
We want to discuss this with you and the following guests in the next Europe Calling:
- Professor Claudia Kemfert | Head of the Energy, Transport, Environment Department at the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin
- Dr Katharina Reuter | Managing Director of the German Sustainable Business Association
- Sascha Müller-Kraenner | Federal Managing Director of the influential NGO “Deutsche Umwelthilfe”
- Nathan Lauer | Head of Policy Analysis at The Goodforces
Date: Thursday, 16 January 2025, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm CET (Berlin/Brussels)
The webinar will be simultaneously interpreted into English.
Come and join us and invite others.
With European greetings,
Maximilian Fries and everyone at Europe Calling e.V.
