Europe Calling “The New Right in Europe: Their Plans, Strategies & Networks”

31.January 18:00 - 19:30

Recording:

Dear friends,

More than 1.5 million people in Germany have taken to the streets against right-wing extremism and the fascist hatred of AfD and its allies since the journalists at Correctiv uncovered the right-wing extremists’ deportation plans (read it here). The unprecedented high turnout from big cities to small rural communities and with people from all walks of life show: Democrats are standing together! That gives hope, especially in this big global election year.

But: The momentum must not fizzle out now, but grow in Europe!

AfD politicians and their allies inside and outside of Germany are becoming visibly nervous in view of the many and large demonstrations even in places they thought of as their strongholds. It is now crucial to keep going and really make a difference. But what exactly needs to change? And what exactly are the right-wing extremists of the “new right” up to?

This is where we at Europe Calling come in. We are launching a major webinar series on the topic next week.

We want to discuss the ideas and strategies of the far right not only in Germany, but also in Europe and beyond with the brightest minds. What are the links to parties such as the AfD and Kickl’s FPÖ, Sunak’s Tories, Meloni’s FdI and Le Pen’s RN? How can democrats push back against fascism? And how does day-to-day politics look like that does not make it easy for the far right?

We start this series on Wednesday with a deep look into the world of ideas and strategies of the New Right with three outstanding guests & your questions:

  • Natascha Strobl. The well-known Austrian journalist is a political scientist and one of the leading experts on right-wing extremism, fascism, the New Right and Identitarians.
  • Marcus Bensmann is a senior reporter at Correctiv, specialising in the New Right, AfD and Russian influence, among other things, and helped uncover the “secret meeting” in Potsdam.
  • Christoph Bautz. As Managing Director of the citizens’ movement Campact, organises demonstrations against the AfD, including a petition against the fascist Björn Höcke that has already reached 1.6 million people.
  • Moderation: Maximilian Fries, Managing Director of Europe Calling e.V.

Date: Wednesday, 31 January 2024, 18:00 – 19:30 CET (Berlin/Brussels)
