Europe Calling “Elections in Greece – What’s at stake for Greece and Europe?”
15.May 2023 19:00 - 21:00
Recording below / Slides here
Dear friends,
On Sunday, May 21, Greece goes to polls to elect a new national parliament. According to polls, it will be a race between the governing, conservative Nea Demokratia and left-wing opposition party Syriza, with smaller parties likely able to tip the balance. The outcome is uncertain.
After the horrific train crash, a large wiretapping scandal and persisting very high costs of living for food, energy and housing (greatest burden of all EU member states) the political situation in Greece is tense. While the climate crisis is also felt in Greece, especially with severe droughts and intensifying wildfires, the climate only plays a small role in the political debate.
In our next Europe Calling in cooperation with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Office in Thessaloniki we will thus have a closer look at Greece with our expert speakers from Greece: What is at stake at these elections – for Greece and for Europe? What are the big topics? How are the austerity measures enforced in the aftermath of the financial crisis affecting Greece today? What role do climate and environmental issues play in the campaigns?
Our panelists are:
- Ιoli Christopoulou, Partner & Policy Director, The Green Tank, Greece
- Michalis Goudis, Director, Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Thessaloniki Office – Greece
- Eurydice Bersi, Journalist, Reporters United / Investigate Europe
- Elias Papatheodorou, Member of the Coordinating Committee of the ‘Green and Purple‘ Alliance
