Dear friends and interested parties!
Disinformation, i.e. the deliberate dissemination of false information to manipulate public opinion, is becoming an increasingly serious problem for democracies. Nowadays, there is no election in which warnings are not issued in advance about attempts to manipulate the outcome through disinformation.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for citizens and media professionals alike to distinguish truth from lies and opinion from propaganda. State and non-state actors use a range of strategies, both in the analogue and, to a large extent, in the digital sphere. In doing so, they also deliberately exploit the gaps created by missing laws or their inadequate implementation.
In this webinar, we want to take a closer look at this issue: What mechanisms are used to manipulate public opinion? What impact does this have on democracy? And how can politicians defend themselves?
Our three guests are:
- Nathanael Liminski | Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International Affairs and Media of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and Head of the State Chancellery
- Nina Jankowicz | US researcher and author. In 2022, US President Joe Biden appointed her head of his new agency, the Disinformation Governance Board. Currently, Nina is the co-founder and CEO of the American Sunlight Project, a non-profit focused on countering disinformation.
- Alexandra Geese MEP | Digital policy expert for the Green/EFA parliamentary group and co-negotiator of the EU Digital Services Act; founding board member of Europe Calling e.V.
