Europe Calling ‘Migration Nordic Style – What does a restrictive immigration policy do to a society?’
4.November 19:00 - 21:00
Recording:
Denmark’s migration policy is repeatedly mentioned as a role model not only in the German discussion on migration policy. Denmark stands not alone, but is representative of a trend in the Nordic countries, characterised by repression and restrictions. One reason given for this is that such policies keep right-wing parties small and societies democratic.
But do these arguments really hold? Are repressive migration policies by democratic parties really the antidote to a shift to the right? And what are their effects on societies and on how we treat each other?
We want to talk about this and discuss your questions in our next Europe Calling event, which is being held in collaboration with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
Our guests are:
- Judith Kohlenberger – cultural scientist and migration researcher at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and author of ‘Gegen die neue Härte’ (Against the New Harshness)
- Dr. Jakob Schwörer – political scientist at the Stockholm office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and expert on populism and right-wing extremism
- Nursemin Sönmez – managing director of the New German Organisation, a post-migrant network of associations, organisations and projects.
