Europe Calling ‘Hotspot Mediterranean – Migration Update: Egypt, Lebanon, Greece & Cyprus’ – Monday, 28 April 2025, 6 – 8 pm CEST
28.April 18:00 - 20:00

Dear friends and supporters,
Unlike on other escape routes, the number of refugees travelling via the eastern Mediterranean route is rising. More and more people from Africa, Asia and the Middle East are taking this dangerous route to Europe. At the same time, there is a risk that even more people will be forced to flee if the tense situation in Lebanon and Egypt deteriorates.
In this situation, the EU uses migration agreements with Egypt and Lebanon to prevent refugees from crossing the eastern Mediterranean to Greece and Cyprus. What do these agreements entail? What impact do they have on refugees and what role do they play in this explosive situation? What consequences could the implementation of the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) have?
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has conducted a large comparative analysis on these questions, based on studies from the respective countries. In the next Europe Calling webinar, we want to hear the results and discuss with experts what future EU migration policy should look like in light of the findings.
Our guests are:
- Study authors Angeliki Dimitriadi from Greece (Until 2024 Head of the Migration Programme & Senior Research Fellow, ELIAMEP) and Amina Fahmy (Migration Policy Researcher) from Egypt
- Niki Georgiou, Executive Director of the Athens office of the German-Greek human rights NGO ‘Equal Rights Beyond Borders’
- Dr Raphael Bossong, Deputy Head of the EU/Europe Research Division at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP Berlin)
