Europe Calling “Democracy knows no borders – A European Right to Associate”
25.October 20:00 - 21:30
Single Market, Banking Union and Freedom of Movement. There are uniform European rules for many central areas of our daily life. But for the organisation of people in associations, there are 24 different sets of rules. A cross-border association in which people from different member states can get involved without having to do extra work to comply with the different national rules? That has been impossible until now.
But that is about to change. On the initiative of the European Parliament, the EU Commission presented a proposal for an EU Right to Associate in September.
The same rights and obligations would apply to a European association in all member states and be protected by the EU. It is precisely in states where governments attack the rule of law that regulations for associations and civil society are abused to silence unpopular voices.
Therefore, a European Right to Associate is a great asset for European civil society and an important building block for the EU of the future.
Parliament’s work on the EU Commission’s proposal begins now. That is why we invite you to our third part of the series “The EU of the Future” (here are part 1 and part 2). What exactly is in the proposal? Where are the possible sticking points? How can you get involved?
