Europe Calling Emergency Webinar ‘LA & USA: How far will Trump go? And how can he be stopped?’

16.June 18:00 - 19:00

Recording:

Dear friends!

After the National Guard, Trump is sending US Marines special forces to Los Angeles. The situation is confusing and changing every day. One thing is clear: this is not a mistake, but a strategy. Fear, violence, arbitrary ICE raids. Tomorrow, there will be a military parade for Trump’s birthday. And just last night, a US senator was brutally arrested for asking questions (!) at a press conference.

It is increasingly reminiscent of Putin’s Russia, North Korea, but also the dictators in Europe before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Trump’s strategies are neither new nor specifically American. And so the resistance against an autocrat who is currently stirring up civil war in his own country could also be informed by successful uprisings against violent autocrats in other countries. Our in other words: Best practices against fascism.

That’s why we’re bringing activists and experts directly from Los Angeles and knowledge from resistance movements against fascists together in this urgent webinar. And we’re asking: What is the situation now? How far could Trump go? And how and where can he be stopped?

Our guests are:

  • Marci Shore, currently professor of European intellectual history at Yale University, will begin teaching at the Munk School for Global Affairs at the University of Toronto this fall. Her work focuses on Eastern Europe and the history of totalitarianism. She just returned from Ukraine, where she guest curated, together with Oksana Forostyna, the Kyiv Book Arsenal with the theme “Everything is Translation.”
  • Nora Benavidez is a civil rights and free speech lawyer in Los Angeles, USA. She is a director of digital justice and civil rights at the think tank Free Press, with a background fighting disinformation, surveillance, and threats to democratic engagement. She is closely involved in the current protests in LA.
  • Jakub Majmurek is a well-known Polish film expert, essayist, and publicist who regularly publishes for the Krytyka Polityczna network and major Polish newspapers. He particularly observes the role of masculinity in politically right-wing movements in Poland and the USA.
