Democracies worldwide are in retreat, and autocracies are on the rise, as the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/v-dem.net\/documents\/29\/V-dem_democracyreport2023_lowres.pdf\">Democracy Report 2023<\/a>&#8221; shows. More and more people around the world are losing their rights, their freedom and often their lives.<\/p>\n<p><b>But how can populism and extremism become so strong that democracy ceases to exist? One explanation is the role of economic and social injustice. People who feel unfairly treated in their political system are more open to forces that want to abolish this system.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In our next Europe Calling, we want to discuss exactly what role economic injustice plays and how more justice in the economy and society can be an antidote with the following guests and all of you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Eric Protzer<\/b> is a researcher at the Harvard Growth Lab at Harvard University, USA. In his much-discussed book &#8220;Reclaiming Populism: How Economic Fairness Can Win Back Disenchanted Voters\u201d, he argues that it is not the inequality in outcomes that drives people to populism, but the inequality of opportunity to advance socially and economically<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><div style=\"width: 955px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2764-1\" width=\"955\" height=\"537\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Protzer_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_EN.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Protzer_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_EN.mp4\">https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Protzer_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_EN.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><b>Professor Ulrike Malmendier <\/b>has been a member of the German government&#8217;s Council of Economic Experts (the so-called &#8220;Wirtschaftsweisen&#8221;) since 2022 and is Professor of Economics and Finance at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. As a behavioural economist, she is particularly interested in human behaviour in economic situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"width: 955px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2764-2\" width=\"955\" height=\"537\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Malmendier_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_DEEN.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Malmendier_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_DEEN.mp4\">https:\/\/europe-calling.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Malmendier_EC_2024-03-18_2mn_DEEN.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Xan L\u00f3pez <\/b>is a climate activist, one of the editors of the magazine Corriente C\u00e1lida (\u201cWarm Stream\u201d) and informal advisor for the progressive electoral coalition SUMAR in Spain.
