Very few people realise that behind this name lies a new and risky dependency for Europe’s energy sector. VG\, a US company founded just a few years ago by a banker and former lawyer\, is now the largest supplier of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European market. German utilities such as the state-owned company SEFE and EnBW have long-term supply contracts with Venture Global\, a company that has made headlines for its close ties to Trump and for facing compensation claims from Shell\, BP & Co. \nWhat began as a hyped alternative to Russian pipeline gas is turning into a new\, one-sided and long-term dependence on the dirtiest fossil fuel and raw material of all: US fracking gas. This will decide whether\, after a total of 20 years\, Viktor Orbán will become Prime Minister once again or whether opposition leader Peter Magyar will prevail. \nOrbán continues to trail Magyar in the polls\, but the gap is narrowing. This is partly because Orbán is now\, as in the last elections\, handing out massive sums of money to pensioners\, soldiers and teachers\, amounting to several billion euros. \nAt the same time\, Orbán has deployed the military across the country\, claiming that Ukrainian sabotage attacks are imminent. However\, in the current geopolitical environment\, it is clearer than ever that ‘security of supply’ in nuclear power is not just a question of reactor output\, but also of security and dependency chains\, and that Russia plays a special role in this: as a warring party in Ukraine\, as the occupier of a nuclear power plant\, and as a global player in the nuclear fuel cycle. \nRussia plays a central role in the global nuclear fuel cycle and is particularly well positioned in the field of uranium enrichment\, controlling almost half of all enrichment capacity\, for example. This strong position makes Russia an important player in several stages of the nuclear supply chain. \nThe Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been under Russian control since 2022 and is managed by Rosatom. It is not currently producing electricity\, but requires a stable external power supply for cooling and safety systems – which has become very challenging since the destruction of the dam at the Kakhovka reservoir\, which supplies cooling water\, in 2023. Repeated damage and interruptions to pipelines increase the risk of serious accidents. \nThis dependency is not only an economic problem\, but also poses geopolitical and security risks. It affects not only prices and supply volumes\, but also creates potential risks of sanctions\, blackmail and failure. \nIn addition\, when we discuss this important topic with our panel of experts: \n\nTatiana Kasperski\, researcher at Södertörn University in Stockholm. The country has now been ruled by Ahmed Al-Scharaa for more than a year. Al-Scharaa was long classified as a terrorist due to his membership in the terrorist organisations al-Qaeda and al-Nusra\, but in November 2025\, UN sanctions against him were lifted. \nThe war and the rule of the Assad regime in Syria have profoundly changed the country over many years. In Germany and Europe\, Syria only receives attention when it comes to migration and deportation debates. The violence\, political uncertainty\, and social upheaval that continue to shape the everyday lives of many people in the country itself and in the diaspora remain largely unnoticed. Political\, social and economic pressures affect their daily lives\, while at the same time new forms of self-organisation\, civil society engagement\, and resistance have emerged in various regions. \nWhat is the real situation in Syria? How can lasting peace and justice be achieved? How can Syria be rebuilt? In just a few years\, whether in our private or professional lives\, AI has become part of everyday life within just a few years. \nBut with daily use\, it is also becoming increasingly clear what price we are all really paying for quick queries to chatbots: From the incredible energy hunger of ever-larger data centres powered by dirty gas or coal-fired power or ancient nuclear power plants\, to the dangerous flooding of digital space with AI-generated disinformation\, to the disregard for copyright and exploitation of so-called ‘ghost workers’ in the Global South: \nThe few AI companies are building their profits on destruction\, paired directly with a story of redemption: if we just put enough resources into AI now\, then godlike ‘artificial general intelligence’ (AGI) will come along and superhumanly solve climate change\, disease and injustice\, which it itself has helped to fuel\, all controlled\, of course\, by the same AI companies. \nBecause all this is very reminiscent of the empires of the past and present\, journalist and author Karen Hao has named her new and highly acclaimed book “Empire of AI”. Over the years\, she has followed the path of ChatGPT developer OpenAI and its founder Sam Altman and written a sharp analysis of this AI empire. Ten years after the historic COP21 in Paris\, there is reason for hope: while in 2015 the world was still on track for 3.6°C of warming by 2100\, ten years after Paris the figure is now 2.6°C. That sounds good at first\, but even 2.6°C is still catastrophic. \nAt the same time\, the gap to the Paris target of 1.5°C\, and thus to a reasonably manageable level of warming\, is growing ever wider. Hard-won measures to protect the climate and the environment are being systematically attacked and weakened. Criminal law is closely linked to social values and ideas of right and wrong. Nowadays\, there is no election in which warnings are not issued in advance about attempts to manipulate the outcome through disinformation. \nIt is becoming increasingly difficult for citizens and media professionals alike to distinguish truth from lies and opinion from propaganda. State and non-state actors use a range of strategies\, both in the analogue and\, to a large extent\, in the digital sphere. In doing so\, they also deliberately exploit the gaps created by missing laws or their inadequate implementation. \nIn this webinar\, we want to take a closer look at this issue: What mechanisms are used to manipulate public opinion? What impact does this have on democracy? And just last night\, a US senator was brutally arrested for asking questions (!) at a press conference. \nIt is increasingly reminiscent of Putin’s Russia\, North Korea\, but also the dictators in Europe before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. \nTrump’s strategies are neither new nor specifically American. And so the resistance against an autocrat who is currently stirring up civil war in his own country could also be informed by successful uprisings against violent autocrats in other countries. Our in other words: Best practices against fascism. \nThat’s why we’re bringing activists and experts directly from Los Angeles and knowledge from resistance movements against fascists together in this urgent webinar. However\, the final agreement not only omits this point\, but also fails to mention climate as a priority in economic and development policies. \nYet\, a strategic policy geared towards the green transition\, pursued with Germany’s and Europe’s partners around the world\, could fill precisely the gaps that Trump\, Xi and Putin are tearing in international geopolitics. \nLast but not least\, countries in the Global South also have essential raw materials\, renewable energy potential\, growing sales markets and a young\, well-educated workforce – all important factors for the German and European economies and their increasing need for energy imports and skilled immigration. \nThe coalition agreement suggests that this opportunity will remain unexplored. \nThe NewClimate Institute has analysed the reorientation of German foreign trade and climate policy\, and developed concrete proposals on how climate policy can be used as a lever for foreign policy goals – while at the same time helping to underline and further develop Germany’s and Europe’s claim to be global partners for the green transformation. \nWe will discuss this in the webinar with experts from two major political foundations. DESCRIPTION:Εγγραφείτε εδώ! \nΑγαπητοί φίλοι\, αγαπητοί ενδιαφερόμενοι! \nΣε αντίθεση με άλλες οδούς διαφυγής\, ο αριθμός των ανθρώπων που διαφεύγουν μέσω της οδού της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου αυξάνεται. Όλο και περισσότεροι άνθρωποι από την Αφρική\, την Ασία και τη Μέση Ανατολή παίρνουν αυτή την επικίνδυνη διαδρομή προς την Ευρώπη. Ταυτόχρονα\, υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος να αναγκαστούν να φύγουν ακόμη περισσότεροι άνθρωποι αν επιδεινωθεί η τεταμένη κατάσταση στο Λίβανο και την Αίγυπτο. \nΣε αυτή την κατάσταση\, η ΕΕ χρησιμοποιεί τις μεταναστευτικές συμφωνίες με την Αίγυπτο και τον Λίβανο για να αποτρέψει τους πρόσφυγες από το να διασχίσουν την ανατολική Μεσόγειο προς την Ελλάδα και την Κύπρο. Τι συνεπάγονται αυτές οι συμφωνίες; Τι αντίκτυπο έχουν στους πρόσφυγες και τι ρόλο παίζουν σε αυτή την εκρηκτική κατάσταση; Ποιες συνέπειες θα μπορούσε να έχει η εφαρμογή της νέας Κοινής Πολιτικής Ασύλου (ΚΕΑΑ); \nΤο Ίδρυμα Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung πραγματοποίησε μια σημαντική συγκριτική ανάλυση με βάση μελέτες από τις αντίστοιχες χώρες. DESCRIPTION:Recording: \n \nRegister here! \nDear friends and supporters\, \nUnlike on other escape routes\, the number of refugees travelling via the eastern Mediterranean route is rising. More and more people from Africa\, Asia and the Middle East are taking this dangerous route to Europe. At the same time\, there is a risk that even more people will be forced to flee if the tense situation in Lebanon and Egypt deteriorates. \nIn this situation\, the EU uses migration agreements with Egypt and Lebanon to prevent refugees from crossing the eastern Mediterranean to Greece and Cyprus. What do these agreements entail? What impact do they have on refugees and what role do they play in this explosive situation? What consequences could the implementation of the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) have? \nThe Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has conducted a large comparative analysis on these questions\, based on studies from the respective countries. A wave of mass demonstrations has swept across Europe and is now taking hold in more and more countries. \nAre we currently witnessing a ‘European Spring’\, a revolt against increasingly autocratic governments\, Russian influence and for a better life in Europe? \nIn our next Europe Calling\, we will bring together guests from many of the countries to talk about the differences\, triggers and similarities of the protest and ask what role citizens and politics can play now in Europe. \nOur guests are: \n\nJelena Vasiljević is a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory\, University of Belgrade\, She was an expert member of The Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG) and currently sits on the European Alternatives Transnational Board.\nClaudiu Craciun is a Lecturer in European Politics at the Faculty of Political Science\, National University of Political Studies and Administration\, Bucharest\, Romania. His main research interests are democracy\, party systems\, party organisations\, and social movements.\nTeona Macharashvili is a democracy activist in Georgia and co-founder of Caucasus Open Space (COS)\, an NGO working for democracy\, the rule of law and sustainability in the region. Teona is also director of Maisi.News\, a platform for investigative journalism.\nMyrto Xanthopoulou is a nonprofit consultant\, with extensive field experience in Greece. She is a consortium member of the Democratic Odyssey and works closely with international and local NGOs and grassroots initiatives.\nChristian Beck is a board member of the Europa-Union where he was part of the steering group for the campaign EurHope for the European Election 2024. He has worked for two Members of the European Parliament focussing on European federalism and the fight against corruption.
